Effect of Surfactant on the Morphological and Optical Properties of ZTO Ceramics

Abstract


Ternary semiconducting oxides of group IIB-IVB metals have attracted immense attention due to their unique properties suitable for a wide range of applications such as in photovoltaics, flat panel displays  gas sensing, etc. - ZnO and SnO2 being the most widely used and versatile among the whole class of materials. Zinc Stannate or ZTO combines the properties of both of them and has many advantages over the corresponding binary counterparts. Synthesis method has a great influence on the properties of materials. In this work, we have adopted the low temperature hydrothermal synthesis method. The reaction conditions were varied using surfactant Hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide - CTAB in various ratios. The particles obtained are of micro-size and the structural studies made using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) suggests the structure to be that of face-centered perovskite structure. The shape and homogeneity of the samples were observed by Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM). The elemental composition was confirmed by Energy Dispersive Spectra (EDS). The high UV absorbance of the synthesised ZTO materials was investigated by UV-Vis Spectroscopy.
